Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT DOES M.E.M.O. STAND FOR? WHEN WERE WE FOUNDED?

M.E.M.O. stands for Medical, Educational Missions and Outreach! M.E.M.O. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, student-run, humanitarian organization founded in 2007.

WHAT DO WE DO?

MEMO’s mission is to serve the underprivileged in their medical and educational needs, within the community and in Vietnam. We do this through volunteering, fundraising on Ring Road, gathering donations, and so much more! Explore this website and join our FB Group for more information!

DO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK/READ/WRITE VIETNAMESE IN ORDER TO JOIN? DO I HAVE TO ATTEND UCI OR BE A PRE-MED/PRE-HEALTH STUDENT?

Nope! We welcome everyone, from all majors, schools, and cultural backgrounds! You can get involved by joining any of our chapters at UCI, UCSD, or USC. You do NOT have to be a student at any of these institutions to participate.

I WANT TO JOIN! HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

Attend our general meetings on Thursdays from 6:30-7:30 PM. Join our FB Group where we frequently post information about and sign-ups for our social and volunteer events! Additionally, you can receive our weekly updates by messaging our FB like page about your interest :) You can also sign up for events through our weekly emails!

IS ATTENDANCE AT EVERY MEETING REQUIRED? HOW DO I STAY UPDATED IF I HAVE A SCHEDULE CONFLICT?

Nope, you do not have to attend all of our general meetings! To stay updated with the club’s social and volunteer events, join our FB Group and message our FB like page so that you can receive our weekly email updates!

IS THERE A MEMBERSHIP FEE? IF SO, HOW MUCH IS IT?

To be an official MEMOber, you can fill out the membership form linked on our FB Group and pay a fee of $30 (that lasts for an entire year). Paid members will be given priority for in-person events such as high-demand service events, health fair volunteer opportunities, and more. As a non-profit organization, all of the membership fees will go towards our mission programs to help those in need, both locally and abroad.

WHAT IS THE MISSION TRIP? WHEN IS IT?

Every summer, a select group of individuals from each MEMO chapter travel to Vietnam for a mission trip in which they serve those living in impoverished communities. As MEMO volunteers, they can shadow/assist doctors, visit orphanages, and help at free health clinics as they strive to bring about hope for both children and adults. If selected, you will be able to witness MEMO’s efforts come into fruition!

For the safety of our members and due to the current pandemic, we hope to go on a Mission Trip to Vietnam in Summer of 2023.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR THE MISSION TRIP? WHAT IS THE ENTIRE PROCESS LIKE?

Be involved! We look for dedicated and active MEMO members who are passionate about our mission. Some ways you can do this are by attending our general meetings, socials, fundraisers, and volunteer events! We highly consider a member’s contribution and participation in our organization throughout the entire school year when selecting individuals for the mission trip. Potential mission trip goers must fill out an application, attend an interview, and if selected, attend and participate in workshops and training. Only active, committed, and dedicated members will be considered.
